Aevitas Egg Freezing

At Aevitas Egg Freezing, we are passionate about helping people to fulfil their family dreams, which are made possible by the incredible fertility opportunities that exist in this modern age of medicine.

Become your own egg donor and ensure your future family with Aevitas Egg Freezing

Life doesn’t always work out the way we planned, which means that sometimes our clients need help to make their family dreams come true regardless of circumstances. Our Fertility Preservation team, work with women who, for a number of reasons, need to freeze their eggs until a time when they are ready to have children.

Fertility is known to decline with age as the quality of the ovary and eggs decline. This means that freezing your eggs at an early reproductive age, ideally before the age of 38 years, will enhance your chances of a successful pregnancy in the future. By preserving younger eggs now, you increase your chances of starting a family later in life, using your own eggs.
The Aevitas Fertility Clinic has FDA approval for egg retrieval, freezing and storage which, combined with internationally recognised fertility doctors, offers our fertility preservation clients excellent future family options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would you consider freezing your eggs?
Women are born with their full supply of eggs, which is approximately 1 – 2 million at birth. As women age, their egg count and quality (genetic normality) decrease and therefore the chances of a successful pregnancy also decrease. Many women consider freezing their eggs to help ensure their chances of having a child in the future.

By preserving your own younger eggs now, you increase your chances of starting a family later in life, using your own eggs.

There are a wide variety of reasons women freeze their eggs which could include:
  • Medical conditions and treatment that could affect fertility, for example chemotherapy.
  • Not having found the right life partner with whom to start a family.
  • Being in a relationship, but not being ready to start a family.
  • Not being in the right phase of life either due to career goals or financial stability.

When is the best time to freeze my eggs?
A woman in her prime reproductive years, between 20 -30 years, has the advantage of premium egg quality and quantity. That being said, you are the youngest today as you ever will be, so regardless of your age, freezing your eggs today, gives your older self the best opportunity to fulfil your family dreams. The ideal age to freeze eggs is between 30 to 35, however the Aevitas Fertility Preservation team has worked with many women older than 35 to assist them on their family journey.

What is the ideal number of eggs to freeze?
The ideal number of eggs to freeze is dependent on your age and is recommended by our expert doctors on your consultation. For example: At the age of 37, you need to freeze 24 eggs for an 80% likelihood of one live birth. However, if you freeze at the age of 34, 12 eggs will give you the same likelihood.

What Does Fertility Preservation Cost?
Each egg freezing client at Aevitas is treated as an individual, which means we quote each treatment to the tailored service provided to each client. As a very rough estimate, an egg freezing cycle with Aevitas costs approximately R 40 000, excluding medication (2024). In some cases, more than one cycle of egg freezing is required for the ideal number of eggs to be frozen. It is as important to us, as it is to you, to ensure you have the best possible likelihood of a livebirth and therefore Aevitas offers a discount for follow up egg freezing cycles.

What are the risks and side effects of fertility preservation?
From a side effect perspective, you can expect to feel bloated due to the hormone medication and some women experience emotional side effects similar to Pre-Menstrual Tension.

If the ovaries are overly responsive to the hormones, there is a very small risk (< 1%) of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). In case of any discomfort or complications our clients have a 24hour direct line to our nursing staff.

Step 1: Consultation & Evaluation

Before proceeding with egg freezing, your fertility doctor will advise basic fertility testing to assess your ovary’s ability to release high-quality eggs. The test results, together with the guidance of your fertility doctor, will assist you to make an informed decision on how to proceed with egg preservation.

When you visit Aevitas Fertility Clinic for a consultation with one of our fertility doctors, your consultation will include: a medical history, physical examination and pelvic ultra-sound examination. During this consultation, the fertility doctor will also explain the procedure of egg freezing to you and answer any questions you may have. As part of the evaluation, blood tests may be performed to test AMH levels (an indicator of ovarian reserve) and to screen for infectious disease.

Traveling clients:

Aevitas offers our travelling clients an online consultation process that enables us to work together no matter where our clients are based. This process includes the following steps:

1. Please have the following blood tests performed at your local pathology laboratory:
  • HIV
  • Hepatitis B and -C
  • RPR / vDRL (Syphilis)
  • AMH
  • Chlamydia Trachomatis IgG / Neisseria Gonorrhoeae IgG
2. Request & complete the ‘Egg freezing –client form’. Submit the form to info@aevitas.co.za and request a telephone/Skype consultation with an Aevitas’ fertility doctor of your choice.
3. Telephonic/Skype consultation with an Aevitas fertility doctor.
4. Plan your trip!
5. Regulate your cycle.

We usually recommend that you use birth control pills, prior to your visit to our clinic, to control the timing of the cycle. This option will be discussed during your in-person or Skype/telephone consultation with the fertility doctor. A combination pill containing the hormones oestrogen and progesterone is usually prescribed for this purpose. Day 1 of your period is the first day of your menstrual cycle. The prescribed birth control pill is normally started on that day. One pill is taken each day at the same time. The last row of pills in the packet is the hormone-free pill (placebo), which will not be taken. You will need to use the pill for at least 10 to 15 days before stimulation is started. When you arrive in Cape Town, you will have a follow-up consultation with an Aevitas fertility specialist.

Step 2: Stimulation

To stimulate your body to produce eggs, you will need to go onto a regime of hormone injections. Your expert fertility doctor will design a hormone treatment schedule specifically for your body. You will receive your stimulation plan, with stimulation medication (usually in the form of hormone injections taken for approximately 10 days). Our team will show you how to administer the injections which most clients find relatively painless.

Step 3: Retrieval & Egg Freezing

Once you have been through the stimulation plan, you are ready for the egg retrieval, which will happen around day 14 of your cycle. During the days leading up to egg retrieval, you will have an average of three follow-up scan appointments at Aevitas. On the day of retrieval, you will come to the clinic having fasted for 8 hours. The egg retrieval process itself takes about 10mins and is performed under deep sedation in our state-of-the-art operating room, within our clinic.

Retrieval is performed under light sedation. Using a needle attached to a catheter, the mature eggs are extracted. Your eggs are stored in tubes and freezing takes place by our highly skilled embryologists.

Eggs are stored in liquid nitrogen tanks and can be stored indefinitely. Gas mixtures, temperatures and liquid nitrogen levels are checked daily and emergency plans are in place in the case of equipment failures or other emergencies (such as power failures). This way we ensure that your eggs are safe!

The procedure of egg retrieval is not painful and takes 10 – 15 minutes. After the procedure, you will recover in our recovery room for an hour or two, before being discharged. From the start of administering medication to retrieval is approximately a two-week process.

Step 4: Creating your family when you are ready

Once your eggs have been stored with us, you can go on with life as normal until you are ready to have a family. Then you can simply return to Aevitas to use your eggs. Your eggs will be thawed and fertilised through an IVF procedure. The IVF procedure can be performed by using your partner’s sperm or donor sperm.

Alternatively, your eggs can be shipped to a clinic of your choice. Please note, shipping cost will be at your own cost.
